Nathan Calvin
Nathan serves as Vice President of State Affairs and General Counsel at Encode. Previously, as Senior Policy Counsel at the Center for AI Safety Action Fund, he spearheaded collaboration with Senator Wiener and Encode on SB 1047, landmark state legislation aimed at reducing catastrophic risks from advanced AI systems. The bill garnered widespread support from AI pioneers Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton (2024 Nobel Laureate in Physics), technology leaders Elon Musk and Vitalik Buterin, the LA Times Editorial Board, and numerous labor unions and civil society organizations. Prior to these roles, spent a year working on the Senate Judiciary Committee as a technology policy fellow. He holds both a law degree and a master’s in public policy from Stanford University, and is a 2023 Johns Hopkins Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity Fellow.
